What’s Exactly List In ActiveCampaign?

Before we jump straight into the actual steps of creating a list and adding contacts to it in ActiveCampaign, let’s quickly understand the bigger picture of what “List” actually means.

Generally, a list is a set of contacts of the same interests intentionally grouped together. Before anyone can join your list inside ActiveCampaign, he or she has to pass through an opt-in form or landing page.

Most ActiveCampaign users do tend to make the mistake of comparing lists and tags together. But when looked at technically, they’re both forms of list segmentations ActiveCampaign offers for its customers.

Tags on the other hand can be used to further segment your contacts as you understand their needs, even when they’re not on the same list.

I have an upcoming article about using tags to segment lists and tailor your marketing to the right contacts.

Until then, let’s dive right into the steps of today’s topic!

How To Add Contacts To A-List In ActiveCampaign?

Now you’ve created a list inside the ActiveCampaign email tool, it’s time to start adding your existing contacts.

In ActiveCampaign, there are three major methods you can use to add your email contacts into your lists which are;

  1. Manually add contacts to your list
  2. Importing the .csv file that contains your contacts
  3. Automatically add new contacts by integrating ActiveCampaign with other tools e.g ClickFunnels.

In this post, we shall only take a look at the first method which is adding contacts manually, one at a time into your ActiveCampaign list.

Below are the super simple steps you can follow to learn how to add contacts to a list in ActiveCampaign software:

Step 1: On the left-hand side of your ActiveCampaign account dashboard, click on Contacts.

Step 2: On the contacts overview page, hover your mouse to the top right corner and click on Add a Contact.

Step 3: Now on the prompted menu, populate and complete the Pop-up Fields and click on Add once you’re done.

Step 4: Once the next page opens, you’ll see 3 actions you can perform based on your goal. But here, you’re going to select Add to list action, and then choose the list you wish to add the contact to.

Step 5: Lastly, click on Apply at the bottom of the menu.

This is how you add a contact to your ActiveCampaign list. The whole process can be repeated for all your email contacts.

One List vs Multiple Lists: Which One Should You Create?

If you’ve been to the ActiveCampaign forum, you’ll find out that one of the most popular threads is a debate on creating either one single list or multiple lists to organize contacts.

With the magnitude of high flexibility, this email tool offers its customers, it greatly depends on knowing what’s best to manage your business.

To my best knowledge, creating multiple lists should probably be appropriate for you cause you don’t want to have one clustered email list.

Luckily, you can create this according to your subscribers’ actions, interests, or status.

For example, you can have a separate list for people that have bought something from your business and another one for potential customers.
